Sonic Adventure 2

Let me just give a summary for this game, it’s not bad but it’s not good, in fact, I had more stress from playing this game than the first one and what’s weird is that fans love this game and I think I know why…for the young generation, as in my generation, they played Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the GameCube and it may or may not be the reason why people love Shadow to the point where I see him in deviantart…it’s not a pretty sight.

And so…thousands of fan art was made inspired by this.

With that said, Sonic Adventure 2 (ソニックアドベンチャー2 Sonikku Adobenchā Tsū), developed by Sonic Team USA and published by Sega, it was released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2001 and was released for the Nintendo GameCube as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (ソニックアドベンチャー2 バトル), released in Japan that same year before the US and Europe got a release in 2002 and was reprinted in Japan in 2004.

The plot for this game is so confusing and so convoluted it’s going to be really difficult so…Dr. Eggman infiltrates a military base where he finds the ultimate weapon known as Shadow the Hedgehog, Eggman wants to take over the world and Shadow wants to destroy humanity. Sonic is now considered a criminal by GUN who accuses him of robbing banks and destroying military goods, but it was Shadow who was doing this…because a super military organisation known as GUN CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BLUE AND BLACK HEDGEHOG???

We’ve seen the future, we’ve seen Sonic 06, we’re not taking any chances.

Meanwhile, Eggman plans to take over the world by using his Grandfather Gerald Robotnik’s abandoned space station known as ARK. Using the Chaos Emeralds to power it, ARK blows up half the moon and the Earth has 24 hours to give up the planet otherwise he’ll use ARK to completely destroy Earth.

New character and every furry’s crush other than SallyRouge the Bat, secretly works for GUN, is a jewel thief and works for Eggman to uncover his secrets. Tails helps Sonic along the way, Amy is completely pointless and Knuckles has to collect the pieces of the Master Emerald again.

This is the simplest summary I can muster up because there’s a lot more, but it’s so cluttered and has way too many continuity errors and plot points that make no sense or has no explanations for some parts of the plot that it’s going to confuse anyone who may play this game for the first time.

Does it matter?

Now there are two types of modes, Hero Mode and Dark Mode. Hero Mode consists of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, when you play as one of the characters, you will play as the next character in the next level. Dark mode consists of Shadow, Rouge and Eggman. Sonic and Shadow’s levels are all about running and bopping enemies with your homing dash, I don’t have too many issues with it though for some reason, whenever I try to jump sometimes, they just dash, even if I press the jump button once. Tails and Eggman’s levels consist of being in mechs and shooting stuff, it’s dull and has poor controls, not to mention that there is a lot of camera issues, in fact, more issues in these levels than in other levels from different characters.

Knuckles: Welp, f*** this game, I’m going to ascend somewhere.

And then we have Knuckles and Rouge’s levels, where we return to treasure hunting…and they are the worst. In fact, Sonic Team really butchered these levels. First of all, the radar in Sonic Adventure will tell you where any of these Emeralds are as long as you’re near it. In this game, you need to collect emeralds in order, one at a time, the radar will only detect one at a time, and what’s worse is that later levels get much bigger, to the point where it will take you up to half an hour or even more to even finish them and at that point I ragequit. Luckily I played this as a child so I played a majority of it though I never finished it.

Sonic: Well if Big is going to get crushed by a GUN truck, then this is all worth it.

The graphics are good but have dated a little bit, though it’s much better than the first one despite the lip syncing not being improved. The level design has improved, especially because they’re specifically tailored for each character, but they’re forgettable and wouldn’t really leave a lasting impression on you. The music is a mixed bag, I freaking love the City Escape and Metal Harbor music and they’re the best pieces in the game, everything else sucks because it consists of boring rock music for Sonic, Shadow, Tails and Eggman. Knuckles has corny rap music (thanks for your contribution to the Sonic universe Hunnid-P) and Rouge has smooth Jazz, and for the story it was trying to convey, it’s kind of inconsistent.

Caption this!

Overall, once again, it’s pretty below average in my opinion, but not the worst game in the series, I don’t hate it but it’s a game I’ll probably never play again, it just has too many problems though for me to continue it and this may mark the beginning of the downfall of Sonic the Hedgehog.

But why do fans like this game? Nostalgia! I like the Sonic Advance games (the first two) but some fans don’t know much about them, though I know of the issues it has but I still a game series I can enjoy…and still ten times better than Sonic Adventure 2.

Dr. Eggman: You’d make a good engine for my badnik.

So I guess fans like the game for the Sonic and Shadow levels, Shadow himself and the Chao Garden…which is also my favourite part of the game, just collect some bars and animals in levels and feed them to the Chaos and watch them mutate into horrific beings, it’s so peaceful. But nostalgia remains the key point on why it’s considered to be the most beloved and last best 3D Sonic games…speaking of which (foreshadowing the next time)

You can get it on the Sega Dreamcast, GameCube, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and PC.
