Don’t you just love celebrity endorsements, if not you’re still human, now don’t get me wrong, when it comes to games there are some good ones like Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker and Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!!! But there is one that is considered the worst game of all time, Shaq-Fu, unfortunately developed by Delphine Software and published by EA and was released in 1994 this was a fighting game starring former basketball player Shaquille O’Neal.
So if you go into the story, Shaq goes around town inviting people over to watch him play basketball for charity (charity my arse), he enters a dojo where he encounters an old man and asks Shaq to enter another dimension to rescue a boy named Nezu from an evil mummy Sett-Ra, while a normal person would run away from the crazy old man, Shaq seems fine with this mission and goes into another world…did I mention this was developed by Delphine Software.
The gameplay is…meh, yep, not awful, just meh, you see in the US version of the game, the game plays really fast and you’re unable to play it properly, however, because I live in the UK, we got PAL so everything runs much slower, resulting in the game being slow, meaning the game functions better, you see right, the PAL version plays better in terms of speed, take that America.
But it doesn’t mean the gameplay is any better, moving is slow, the hit detections is a mess, and the only way to defeat an opponent is to mash one kick button, the jumping is physically awkward, seeing as when you jump you’re pretty much hopping on the moon, most opponents have overpowered abilities, you play as Shaq for the story mode, Shaq is pretty much a close-ranged fighter for the most part, but most opponents are long-ranged, and they’re faster than you, you just want to beat the guy and dodging isn’t going to help, it’s unfair, it’s dumb and trying to find a strategy is a waste of time due to the poor controls.
All fighters have special attacks but they’re very difficult to do, again because of the controls. The graphics actually look very nice, they’re very decent and fit well with the world. The music is forgettable; don’t care about it, next! There is another mode called Duel in which you can play any fighter and fight other fighters, and then there is 2-player mode, but good luck finding someone willing enough to play it with you.
Overall, while it has poor controls, unfair gameplay at times and forgettable music, it has some nice graphics and the sprite animation is smooth, it functions ok when you know what to do but for the love of all things beautiful play the PAL version (unless you’re American and thus it will play your speed anyway), because it plays slower but is better that way.
But a lot of gamers call it the worst game of all time, there’s even a website dedicated to receiving and finding copies of Shaq-Fu and destroying them. Harsh!
But the story doesn’t end there, as this year (as of 2014) a sequel is going to be released Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn, it’s funded on indiegogo and they got their target. God help us all.
You can get it on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, Game Gear, Game Boy and Amiga.
Next time: a fighting game that’s MUCH WORSE!!!
