Time to kick ass and eat chicken…and I’m all out of chicken…that’s it, I’m off. Only joking, but Duke Nukem is a cool video game character and was a product of the 90’s when Duke Nukem went 3D. First-person shooters were different to today’s, from what I gather it was basically 2D sprites in a 3D world, it had an identity to each other and they were fun and Duke Nukem 3D was one of them.
Aliens invade and want to kill the human race I guess and Duke Nukem decides to KICK some alien ASS. And that’s about it. Yeah, what more do you really need in an old school FPS. There are three episodes, a number of levels per episode, L.A Meltdown, Lunar Apocalypse and Shrapnel City. Then choose one of four difficulties, I go with Let’s Rock as being the normal difficulty and I have experience with FPSes.
So it’s an FPS for the 90’s, super happy fun time, so let’s start with the weapons, always default Pistol, Shotgun, Ripper which is a chain gun, an RPG, Pipe Bombs, Shrinker in which you can shrink your enemies and stomp them, the awesome Devastator which fires numerous amount of missiles at once at enemies, TripBomb, which when placed on the floor will explode when an enemy trips on it and a Freezer which…well you should know what it does. These weapons are very fun to use and they pack a whole lot of punch.
You get your medikits big and small and armour and even performance items like Jetpacks, Night Vision Goggles, Protective Boots to protect your feet against toxic, hot or other harmful surfaces for a short period of time, Scuba Gear to swim underwater, Holoduke in which you can create a decoy of Duke to fool enemies and Steroids…err…I do not approve of taking this drug for any reason, even if it makes you muscular quicker it can lead to horrific side effects, but this is a game, it’s fiction and it should stay that way, say NO to drugs! But YAY to Duke taking them and possibly leading him to have marbles of steel.
You have a lot of weapons and items to take down the aliens, you got Assault Troopers, Pig Cops (which is the best metaphor ever), Assault Commanders and many more aliens to take down. Most of the aliens are quite memorable and even some are up there with Doom’s monsters and demons. For the character, Duke’s cool, he’s tough, he loves to shoot aliens and loves nothing more than Babes (women) in the strip club, you can pay a babe to flash her…chest? But don’t worry, it’s censored unlike Duke Nukem Forever. However, you can shoot the babes, which angered a lot of parents because they thought shooting women was part of the game when in actuality if you shoot them, more enemies approach, so think of it as punishment. But the flashing that’s censored is tame by today’s standards and I think nothing of it.
Overall, it’s another fun shooter from the 90’s, the graphics are of course a product of it’s time and I think it holds up very well as an Old School FPS. The theme music is bad ass, it’s an action theme and I’m surprised no movie before has made a theme music like that, but then again there were. What people liked about the character is that Duke was one of the first characters to talk and have a personality in a first person shooter as characters in previous FPSes like Wolfenstein and Doom,
their main characters remained silent. Duke had the personality of a macho 80’s movie hero which was the very reason why he was created. The difficulty is quite difficult if you play it for the first time, even in the normal mode so be prepared. If you want old school shooters that isn’t Doom, this is a good one to look.
You can get it on MS-DOS, Game.com, Mac OS, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Mega Drive, Xbox Live Arcade, iOS, Android, Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
